NHS online hospital: revolutionising digital healthcare delivery by 2027

Transforming patient care through technology-enabled staffing solutions

The NHS is embarking on a groundbreaking digital transformation with the announcement of NHS Online, a revolutionary virtual hospital service set to launch by 2027. This innovative approach to healthcare delivery represents a significant shift towards technology-enabled staffing and workforce management, creating new opportunities for enhanced patient care whilst addressing capacity challenges across the health service.

A new model of care delivery

NHS Online will operate without a physical site, instead digitally connecting patients to expert clinicians anywhere in England. The service will focus initially on planned treatment areas with the longest waiting times, expanding gradually to encompass more specialties where remote care is clinically safe and appropriate.

Patients referred by their GP will have the option to access specialist care through the NHS App, enabling them to book appointments, receive consultations, and manage their treatment journey from home. When physical interventions are required, patients can schedule scans, tests, or procedures at Community Diagnostic Centres at times that suit them.

Workforce solutions at the heart of innovation

This digital transformation creates exciting opportunities for healthcare staffing platforms and workforce management systems. The initiative will require sophisticated staff scheduling and rota management to coordinate clinicians across different locations. NHS staff bank systems will need to adapt to support this new model of flexible workforce deployment.

The service promises to deliver up to 8.5 million appointments and assessments in its first three years – four times more than an average NHS trust. This increased capacity will be achieved through innovative workforce solutions that maximise the efficiency of existing clinical staff whilst creating new opportunities for bank staffing and locum cover.

Supporting Operational Excellence

Agile Workforce's expertise in neutral vendor services and direct engagement solutions positions us perfectly to support NHS trusts as they adapt to this new digital landscape. Our workforce management platform can help organisations coordinate their clinical teams across both traditional and virtual care settings, ensuring seamless integration between physical and digital services.

The NHS Online initiative builds on successful pilots already in place, including University Hospital Southampton's virtual follow-up pathway for inflammatory bowel disease, which achieved a 73% reduction in consultant-led outpatient appointments and a 58% reduction in waiting times. These results demonstrate the potential for technology-enabled staffing to transform service delivery whilst
maintaining high-quality patient care.

Collaborative approach to implementation

The success of NHS Online will depend on effective collaboration between technology providers, healthcare professionals, and workforce solutions specialists. Our collaborative bank approach and integrated workforce solutions can help NHS trusts navigate this transition, ensuring they have the right staff in the right place at the right time, whether delivering care virtually or in person.

As the NHS moves towards this digital future, organisations will need robust workforce analytics and compliance tracking to manage staff across multiple care delivery models. Our healthcare staffing platform provides the visibility and control needed to optimise workforce deployment in this evolving landscape.

The NHS Online initiative represents a significant step forward in healthcare innovation, demonstrating how technology-enabled staffing solutions can enhance patient access whilst supporting operational efficiency. As this transformation unfolds, Agile Workforce remains
committed to supporting NHS organisations in delivering exceptional patient care through innovative workforce solutions.
